Nuclear risks: iodine tablets distributed in 2016 to the population

Iodine tablets will be distributed from January 2016 to people living near the French nuclear power plants.

When you live near a nuclear plant, the risk of radioactive accident is never discarded. The Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) launched in January 2016 when the fifth preventive distribution campaign of iodine tablets.

More than a distribution campaign, the operation also aims to inform about nuclear risks and advance risk awareness in public opinion, at least for the people who live near nuclear power plants.

Why ingest iodine?

Who is affected by the iodine distribution?

Iodine will be distributed to all persons and communities (schools, companies, administrations ...) located within 10 km of the 19 EDF nuclear sites. Approximately 400,000 homes and 2,000 establishments open to the public, spread over 500 municipalities.

How to get iodine tablets?

People will receive a letter inviting them to withdraw pharmacy boxes of iodine tablets, once the information campaign launched.

If people do not move, their tablets will be sent by post a few months after the operation.
